It's hard to think of the Foundation's 40th without thinking of Gordon Schwartz z"l. JCF President from 1994-1996, Gordy was the ultimate dreamer. He had enough dreams to go around. And when Bobby Kleinman stepped in, Gordy knew he now had the tools to realize many of them - for his family, his community and Israel. It was a perfect fit.
Gordon Schwartz z"l
December 28, 1997..
. Gordy Schwartz, our immediate past president, will be forever remembered as an extraordinary human being whose love of his family and the Jewish people was manifested every day.
Gordy cared - about this community, about Israel and about Jewish life. His numerous leadership roles in organizations such as Maccabbia, the YM-YWHA, Federation CJA - bear testament to his commitment.
His legacy to the Foundation is immeasurable. From the moment he became President, Board meetings and other events were never the same. We were infused with his passion and drive; fueled by his fierce commitment to always reach far beyond. With the Foundation he discovered a new vehicle to carry his dreams into the future."Connecting with the Foundation actually gives us the power to affect our community’s destiny. To me, that’s a profound realization.."
Gordy was forever nurturing relationships and building his community. He not only made us laugh, he always made us care - for fellow Jews everywhere. His love for community; his energy and passion were infectious. And when it came to soliciting support for the future, no one was more engaging.“I know you share our goals - because you are among the most consistently generous and committed individuals in our community....So I’m going to cut to the chase and just come out and ask you: Are we in your will?....” Address to JCF Golden Givers 1996
Gordon took delight in everything - his family, his community and Israel's changing landscape - evidenced every time he led a Maccabbia delegation or mission. “It’s wild to travel to Metulla," he said, "and suddenly discover there’s a skating rink right on the Lebanese border..!”
During his presidency, planned giving came into its own and Gordy made sure he understood the new giving options available to fund the future for the communities he served and loved."...Aside from Israel, there's still no finer place to live Jewishly than Montreal, and it is our responsibility to maintain this special place for future generations."
We got the message, Gordy. Thank you.
